Cyclopentasiloxane (decamethylcyclopentosiloxane) in cosmetics: is it safe?
A super commonly used 5 unit long cyclic structure organosilicon that is water thin and does not stay on the skin but evaporates from it (called volatile organosilicon). Cyclopentasiloxane is a type of organosilicon that is very commonly used in skin and hair care products today. Similar to other silicones, it gives skin and hair a silky smooth feel. It is often combined with non-volatile (i.e., stays on the skin) dimethicone because together the two form a waterproof, breathable protective barrier on the skin without the negative sticky feel.
