Nodular prurigo

healthy PIG
Prurigo nodularis is a chronic skin disease that typically manifests as multiple, firm, flesh-colored to pink papules, plaques, and nodules, usually on the extensor surfaces of the limbs. The lesions are very itchy and can occur at any age. It's often associated with another condition, such as atopic dermatitis or any skin condition associated with chronic itching. Diagnosis is primarily clinical. However, in many cases, chronic lichen simplex and hypertrophic lichen planus may be clinically indistinguishable. Therefore, diagnostic confirmation by dermoscopy and histopathology becomes very important. Treatment options vary and include effective antipruritic agents, immunomodulators, and neuromodulators. Treatment times for confirmed cases are prolonged, and it is important to improve patient compliance with education and counseling. This activity reviews the evaluation and treatment of prurigo nodularis and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in caring for patients with this disease.
