Zinc L-carnosine and its positive effects on oral mucositis, dysgeusia and gastrointestinal diseases

Zinc L-carnosine (ZnC), also known as PepZin GI™, is a chelate compound containing L-carnosine and zinc. It is a relatively new molecule that has a variety of health benefits. There are several studies supporting the benefits of ZnC in restoring the stomach lining, healing other parts of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, improving taste disorders, ameliorating gastrointestinal disorders, and strengthening the skin and liver. Oral mucositis is a common complication of cytotoxic radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. This happens to almost every head and neck cancer patient who receives radiation therapy. It is often overlooked because it is not considered life-threatening. However, mucositis often leads to decreased quality of life and cessation of treatment, ultimately reducing positive outcomes. Therefore, solutions to solve this problem should be considered. The main mechanism of action is thought to be local and related to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant functions of ZnC. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to discuss ZnC-related research and explore its benefits, particularly in the treatment of diseases associated with damaged epithelial cells, such as oral mucositis. Evidence supports the safety and effectiveness of ZnC in the maintenance, prevention, and treatment of mucosal linings and other epithelial tissues. The study supports its use in the treatment of gastric ulcers (approved in Japan) and upper gastrointestinal disease, and suggests other applications, particularly oral mucositis.
