Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), Teflon and related chemicals
PTFE has been in commercial use since the 1940s. It has a wide range of uses because it is very stable (does not react with other chemicals) and provides a virtually friction-free surface. Most people are familiar with it as a nonstick coated surface for pans and other cookware. It is also used in many other products such as fabric protectants.
