Reality beyond stereotypes
Science shows that pigs are emotional, intelligent, curious animals who engage in a range of complex behaviors. When you look at it this way - they shouldn't be associated with the usual insults.
Contrary to the idea that pigs are lazy, some of them are keen swimmers. There is an uninhabited island in the Bahamas where wild boars enjoy swimming in the crystal clear waters.
sensitive social creature
Pigs are social animals. Studies have shown that they enjoy playing together, are empathetic, and are affected by the emotions of other pigs.
They have been found to wag their tails when they see their fellow pigs experiencing something positive, and to cover their ears when other pigs experience something negative.
Piglets cling to their mothers and squeal in pain when they are separated.
Pigs are so smart that they can even use mirrors to assess their surroundings. When pigs see a reflection in a food bowl, they use the reflection to locate the food.
They're often thought of as dirty, but pigs actually use dirt as sunscreen to protect their delicate skin, which burns easily in the sun.
Pig farms are often unable to meet the complex needs of pigs
Pigs are descendants of Eurasian wild boars, and the behavioral needs of domestic pigs are almost identical to those of their wild ancestors [6]. For example, they need space and the opportunity to forage to be happy and healthy.
In poor welfare farming systems, pigs often do not have the opportunity to behave in the way they need to, such as playing and foraging.
Studies have shown that pigs housed next to each other are more aggressive and often show their mental distress by biting bars and tails.
These behaviors usually occur when pigs are frustrated, bored and lacking control over their surroundings.
The farming industry must consider the needs of pigs
Despite the negative association with pigs, research proves they are no different from many other animals, including the pets we live with.
Pigs can feel a range of complex emotions and suffer physically and mentally.
