What is tall oil rosin?
Tall oil resin (TOR) is also named tall oil resin and tall oil rosin .
Tall oil rosin is the product of vacuum distillation of crude tall oil.
The resin acid fraction is collected from the lower part of the first distillation column. Tall oil rosin is a mixture of multiple resin acids:
- Rosin acid,
- Dihydroabietic acid,
- Longleaf rosin acid,
- Neorosin acid,
- Isopimaric acid, etc.
In addition to resin acids, tall oil rosin contains up to 6% unsaponifiable matter.
Tall oil rosins are offered with different softening points depending on the processing method. Specific processes provide cost-effective and flexible application.
The main difference between "strong" tall oil rosin and ordinary rosin is the higher content of rosin resin acids. Process costs can be reduced when using "strong" tall oil rosin , which is used for disproportionated tall oil rosin because it already contains large amounts of dihydroabietic acid - a ready-made product from rosin acid disproportionation.
Can be shipped as liquid or solid tall oil rosin. For liquid rosin, transportation is carried out using rail tankers, tank containers or tank cars specially designed for the transportation of liquid rosin. For solid rosin, it is filled in steel drums made of galvanized steel.
Applications and uses
- Used in production to improve the strength and gloss of alkyd resin coatings
- for electronic soldering technology
- Used in rosin disproportionation reaction
- Used in synthetic rubber production processes
- for rubber production
- For obtaining glycerol and pentaerythritol esters
storage
- There are no additional special requirements for storage conditions
- Do not smoke indoors
- No children or animals allowed
- Warehouses should protect materials from the direct effects of sunlight, humidity, contamination and mechanical damage
- Keep away from heat sources
- Keep away from open flames
- Avoid direct sunlight
- Store separately from food in a dry and ventilated place
- Store product at ambient temperature
What is tall oil?
Tall oil, also known as liquid rosin or tall alcohol, is a viscous, yellow-black odorous liquid obtained primarily from the pulping of coniferous trees as a by-product of the wood pulp manufacturing process for kraft paper.
The name originates from the anglicization of the Swedish "tallolja" ("pine tar").
Tall oil is the third largest chemical by-product of kraft paper mills after lignin and hemicellulose. The composition of crude tall oil varies widely, depending on the type of wood used. A common measure of quality for tall oil is its acid value. For pure pine, the acid number may be in the 160–165 range, while a mill using a mix of softwood and hardwood may produce an acid number in the 125–135 range.
Crude tall oil usually contains rosin, which contains resin acids (mainly rosin acid and its isomers), fatty acids (mainly palmitic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid) and fatty alcohols, unsaponifiable sterols (5-10 % ), some sterols and other alkyl hydrocarbon derivatives.
After fractionation, tall oil rosin is obtained, and the rosin content is reduced to 10-35%. By further reducing the rosin content to 1% to 10%, tall oil fatty acids (TOFA; TOFA is a low-cost, vegetarian-lifestyle-friendly alternative to tallow fatty acids used in the production of soaps and lubricants.) , which is cheap and mainly composed of oleic acid, a source of volatile fatty acids.
