Asians are more likely to develop diabetes than Caucasians, so people don't have to be obese to develop diabetes. Starchy white rice can cause your blood sugar to go too high and increase your risk of diabetes.
A meta-analysis of four major studies by the Harvard School of Public Health, involving more than 350,000 people spanning four to 20 years, and published in the British Medical Journal, yielded some shocking findings.
One of them showed that eating a plate of white rice a day (on a regular basis) increased the risk of diabetes in the entire population by 11%.
Second, it shows that Asians, like the Chinese, eat four servings of rice a day, while Americans and Australians only eat five servings a week.
Long-grain white rice is also better at raising blood sugar than short-grain white rice—higher sugar levels cause the pancreas to produce more insulin, and frequent highs can lead to diabetes.
Try adding 20% brown rice to white rice. This amount was enough to reduce their risk of diabetes by 16%.
Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure and amputations.
