5 e-cigarette facts you need to know
If you've thought about quitting smoking, you're not alone. Nearly seven in 10 smokers say they want to quit. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health—smoking damages nearly every organ in your body, including your heart. Nearly one-third of heart disease deaths are caused by smoking and second-hand smoke.
You may be tempted to use e-cigarettes (e-cigarettes, vape pens, and other non-disposable and disposable vaping devices) as a way to ease the transition from traditional cigarettes to not smoking at all. What do we know about e-cigarettes?
E-cigarettes go by many different names, and sometimes it’s hard for people to understand what these devices are really about. Here, we address some of the common questions people ask about vaping.
An overview of the effects of e-cigarettes on human health
Considered a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes for many, e-cigarettes have revolutionized the tobacco industry over the past few decades. In e-cigarettes, the burning of tobacco is replaced by the heating of e-liquid, leading some manufacturers to suggest that e-cigarettes have less harmful effects on the respiratory system than tobacco consumption. Other innovative features such as nicotine content adjustment and pleasant flavor selection have won the favor of many users. However, the safety of e-cigarette consumption and its potential as a method of smoking cessation remains controversial due to limited evidence. Furthermore, the heating process itself has been reported to lead to the formation of new decomposition compounds of questionable toxicity. Extensive in vivo and in vitro studies have been conducted to better understand the effects of these novel inhalable compounds on human health. Toxicological analysis results show that e-cigarettes are safer than traditional cigarettes, although short-term use of e-cigarettes can have harmful effects. Worryingly, little research has been done on the potential long-term effects of e-cigarette consumption.
