Background history

Orin apple (Malus domestica; Orin apple) is a variety born in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. They are products of the Aomori Apple Research Station in Japan. They are the result of a cross between the golden apple "Golden Delicious" and the Indian apple "Indo" ( Golden apples are the parent variety not only of Orin, but also of various other apples such as Tsugaru and Jonagold. The Indian apple is Japan's first apple variety and was born in Aomori Prefecture). The Wanglin apple variety was improved around 1931, and the first fruits were produced in 1943. In 1952, it was named Wanglin, which means "King of Apples". Wanglin apples are the third most produced apple in Japan after Fuji and Tsugaru.

Although they are grown primarily in Japan, they are produced commercially in British Columbia, Canada, and on a smaller scale in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Although it is known as the pioneer variety of green apple, it has not been registered as a variety by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Wang Lin’s mother, Golden Apple, was born in the United States and is a yellow-skinned apple variety.

description/flavor

Wanglin apples are medium to large in size, crisp and tender in texture, firmly wrapped in yellow-green peel and not easily bruised. This very delicious apple is sweet, juicy, aromatic and low in acid. Some say it has a hint of pineapple flavor, while others describe it as having a light pear flavor.

Wanglin apples have a refreshing aroma and high juice content. Characterized by softness. As the apple matures, the spots on the surface of the apple become more obvious and small brown cracks appear on the surface. The brown cracks are called "rust", and those with more rust and a rough surface are said to have a sweeter taste. One characteristic of the taste of Wanglin apples is that they are less sour, so it is easier to feel the sweetness.

Wanglin apples are cholesterol-free and contain pectin, a beneficial dietary fiber. This fiber may actually help lower the body's cholesterol levels and is said to possibly help prevent heart attacks. Pectin also slows down glucose metabolism in diabetics. Apples contain potassium, which may reduce the chance of stroke, and contain trace amounts of boron, which is believed to strengthen bones and increase mental energy. Apples provide small amounts of vitamin A and vitamin C, and contain only trace amounts of sodium. An average-sized apple contains approximately 80 calories. Unpeeled apples provide the most nutrients. Eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day may reduce your risk of cancer. A recent study found that eating nine to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, plus three servings of low-fat dairy products, can effectively lower blood pressure.

How to choose

The way to choose good Wanglin apples is to choose ones with a sense of weight. If it feels hard and heavy when you pick it up, it means it is full of pulp, which is a sign of freshness. Another great option is one that makes a clear sound when tapped with your finger. Medium sized balls are recommended, they taste better and last longer. If the peel is dark yellow-green with some green remaining at the bottom, it means the aroma is strong. If the apple weighs very little, you can tell that it has dried out, lost its moisture, and the flesh has become soft and tasteless.

Orin turns yellow when ripe. Taste preferences vary from person to person, so if you like sourness, dark green is recommended, and if you don't like sourness, dark yellow is recommended. Also, if you choose something with a stronger sweetness, it is recommended to choose something with fruity spots and rust.

Wanglin apples have excellent storage stability and can be used for a long time. If you store apples the right way, you can enjoy their flavor longer.

Damage is likely if stored in a dry or warm place. They are often given as winter gifts.

If you want to store Wanglin apples at home, you can wrap them in newspapers to prevent them from drying out, then put them in plastic bags and put them in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator, where they can be stored and enjoyed for a long time. Its umami flavor lasts for a long time.
