Baby cabbage, also known as:
- Baby Chinese Cabbage
- Baby Napa Cabbage
- Wawa Choy
- mini napa
- Wawasai/わわさい(Wawasai)
Literally meaning baby greens, they are small Napa cabbages harvested early. These young cabbages have a similar flavor to adult cabbages, with a sweeter, milder flavor and more tender leaves. Baby cabbage is often interchangeable with Napa cabbage, but not vice versa.
Native to China , they maintain their shape and grow to 3-4 pounds each.
The new Chinese cabbage variety CM15018 is an inbred line that is a cross between Jin Fuyu (female parent) and Chun Yuehuang (male parent). It was bred through 11 generations of inbred lines. The new variety has undergone variety comparison trials, trials in different regions of Yunnan Province and production demonstrations. The average yield is 83 820 kg/hm2, which is 11.40% higher than the control variety Chunyuehuang. This new variety was registered in 2018.
Baby cabbage needs full sun and fertile, well-drained soil to grow firm, sweet heads. To avoid stunted growth, do not overcrowd seedlings before thinning or transplanting. Keep weeding and watering evenly. Feed monthly with fish emulsion or all-purpose fertilizer; vigorous, healthy plants are more successful at resisting pests. Use non-toxic BT (Bacillus thuringiensis) against caterpillar pests.
