What is Vaseline?
Petrolatum , also known as petroleum jelly, is a semi-solid mixture extracted from petroleum. It has been a staple ingredient in skin care and cosmetics for decades due to its melting point close to body temperature, its versatile properties and wide range of applications , and its long shelf life.
Petrolatum jelly consists of a mixture of hydrocarbons (mainly paraffins) and microcrystalline waxes. It is odorless and colorless.
Vaseline has a semi-solid, jelly-like consistency at room temperature. Depending on temperature changes, it can become stronger or softer.

use
skin care
One of the main uses of petroleum jelly is in skin care products. It is often found in moisturizers, lotions, ointments, and lip balms because of its ability to form a barrier on the skin, preventing moisture loss and protecting the skin from external factors.
wound healing
Vaseline is sometimes used on minor cuts, scrapes, and burns to form a protective barrier and promote the healing process.
Lubricant
It is used as a lubricant in a variety of industries, including machinery and equipment.
cosmetic:
Petroleum jelly is a common ingredient in cosmetics such as lipstick, lip gloss, and some cosmetic formulas.
barrier function
Vaseline forms an occlusive barrier on the skin, creating a protective layer that helps lock in moisture. This barrier function is especially beneficial for people with dry or sensitive skin.
Hypoallergenic
Petroleum jelly is generally considered hypoallergenic and is unlikely to cause allergic reactions or skin irritation. It is suitable for people with sensitive skin.
non-comedogenic
Although petroleum jelly has a thick texture, it is non-comedogenic, which means it is less likely to clog pores. This property makes it suitable for use on the face and body.
medical use
Petroleum jelly has been used in some medical applications, such as protecting the skin around wounds or treating conditions such as eczema.
Supervision and safety
In many countries, including the United States, petroleum jelly used in cosmetics and personal care products must meet specific purity standards to ensure it is safe for use.
Does Vaseline contain no polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons ( PAHs)?
Vaseline is refined from crude oil. The color of crude oil is very dark brown. Crude oil must be well purified to become pure white, translucent petroleum jelly. PAH residues in crude oil are often found in the final product.
Variety
Different brands may offer different versions of petroleum jelly with added ingredients or formulations to enhance specific properties, such as added vitamins or flavors.
Vaseline and Vaseline Substitutes
While petroleum jelly is widely used and generally well tolerated, some people prefer alternatives such as vegetable oils, shea butter, or other occlusive agents. The choice often comes down to personal preference, skin type and specific skin care goals.
It's worth noting that while petroleum jelly is considered safe for most people, some people may prefer alternative ingredients in their skin care products. If you have a specific skin concern or condition, it is recommended to consult a dermatologist for personalized advice.
