Calcium carbonate is a compound with the chemical formula CaCO3. Calcium carbonate (INS 170(i)) is a fine, odorless, white or colorless microcrystalline powder. It provides white color to various medicines and foods. Calcium carbonate is a food additive with multiple functions. It is an acidity regulator, anti-caking agent, emulsifier, stabilizer and colorant. It is part of the category of natural additives of mineral origin and can be used as:
- E170(i)-Calcium carbonate; or
- E170(ii)-calcium bicarbonate
For the food and pharmaceutical industries, it is usually obtained from marble.
It is widely used as surface colorant, anti-desiccant, stabilizer for canned fruits and filler in pharmaceuticals.
It is a source of calcium and is included in some dietary supplements.
It also has the effect of neutralizing hyperacidity.
