Purpose
An important factor in facial aging is the loss of adipose tissue volume. The loss of fat tissue leads to a loss of skin elasticity, which is part of the aging process. Collectively, these contribute to wrinkle formation. Fat injections are a common solution to this problem, used to reduce the effects of facial aging and increase fullness of the lips and breasts. However, fat injection is an invasive surgical procedure. This research aims to discover new cosmetic ingredients that can increase the volume of subcutaneous fat cells to create a more youthful skin appearance.
Research methods
The study focused on the number of subcutaneous preadipocytes and the accumulation of lipid droplets. To discover natural ingredients that increase both, extracts of 380 natural products were prepared and screened for their effects on human subcutaneous preadipocyte growth and differentiation (i.e., lipid droplet accumulation). One extract was found to have the desired effect and was further studied to identify the active compounds. The research then evaluated its efficacy in a human clinical study.
result
Research has found that Arnica montana L. flower extract (AFE) can accelerate the growth and differentiation of human subcutaneous preadipocytes. AFE was found to significantly increase the size of adipocyte spheroids. The active compounds 6- O- methacryloylhelenalin and 6- O- isobutyrylhelenalin were found to be responsible for the effects of AFE on preadipocytes. In a human clinical study, a gel containing 1% AFE successfully increased lip and facial volume and reduced wrinkles without adverse effects.
in conclusion
Studies have reported that AFE and the compounds contained therein, 6- O- methacryloylhenaline and 6- O- isobutyrylhenalin, act on preadipocytes. AFE is ideal for products used to plump the face to reduce wrinkles and create a more youthful appearance.
