Sodium citrate is used to prevent donated blood from clotting during storage. Sodium citrate is used in medicine as an alkalizing agent instead of sodium bicarbonate to neutralize excess acid in blood and urine. It can be used to treat metabolic acidosis and chronic kidney disease.
